Description of course:Our study of FLIGHT will be a captivating, whole language, thematic unit about the development of flight. The core is based around four high quality literature selections. Activities set the stage for reading, encourage the enjoyment of reading, and help students apply the concepts they learn through reading to daily life. In addition, the theme is interwoven with activities across the curriculum in language arts, writing, math, social studies, science and art. Many of the activities encourage cooperative learning.
Most class time will be project oriented but will at times involve some reading and writing. On completion of the course, each student will have a completed lap book to help them remember the concepts discussed in class and possible encourage them to continue investigating the topic on their own.
Finally, while the topic may lend itself to the thought of “being for boys” the concepts are certainly applicable to girls and the women that influenced flight will not be ignored. Description of course:In the Graphic Arts class we will be focusing on artistic creation with comic books as the central theme. We will be using a structured segmented approach divided by weeks to explore every aspect of the creation of a comic book. We will be starting out with the creative writing aspect including the creation of interesting plots and their structures reaching into subjects such as plot point arrangement and scripting. From there we will head into the areas of dynamic action and character design. We’ll also take a look at how the pages of comics are arranged for maximum impact and the technical aspects of these setups. We will cover the tools and techniques used by comic book artists including rough and finished sketches,inking and coloring. It is my hope that as a class we will be able to create an interesting comic book from our explorations that will involve the participation of all the students. There will be homework as we make the effort to produce a practiced artistic response in the students. I will be using “The Official Marvel Tryout Book” and “How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way” both of which are available online through a variety of sources and would make great resource material for students. A great imagination and a desire to participate in this as a group project will help as well. I will be sharing examples of artists from both the comic book industry and other sources as we explore art and it applications in the world of storytelling.

Description of course:Everyday art will focus on exploring the world of art using many mediums. We will discover different kinds of paints and what techniques can be used to get different effects. Mediums used will include: clay, chalk pastels, charcoal, and pencil. All students will get to learn about these mediums and how they are used. The class will also do some recycle or nature work as well as we work with items from our everyday life to create beautiful pieces of work.
Each student will work at their own pace in our non-judge mental classroom as bashing other’s works in any way shape or form is not acceptable. There is no “wrong” art , nor is there “ugly” or “stupid” art either. “I can’t do that” isn’t an option either. I will show them how to break down a picture into objects so they don’t get so overwhelmed at the sight of the final project from the very beginning. Small steps that everyone can do! Each project is adaptable to each student on their own level.
I will require that all students have at least 1 DRAWING pencil I recomend the softest one they have b/c it’s much easier for them to learn shading with these types. In addition, all students will need a sketch book, a kneadable eraser, a gum eraser and a pencil sharpener! And I would recommend an art smock or large shirt to use on messy days! We WILL get messy! However, as humans we are washable!
