Description of course:In the Graphic Arts class we will be focusing on artistic creation with comic books as the central theme. We will be using a structured segmented approach divided by weeks to explore every aspect of the creation of a comic book. We will be starting out with the creative writing aspect including the creation of interesting plots and their structures reaching into subjects such as plot point arrangement and scripting. From there we will head into the areas of dynamic action and character design. We’ll also take a look at how the pages of comics are arranged for maximum impact and the technical aspects of these setups. We will cover the tools and techniques used by comic book artists including rough and finished sketches, inking and coloring. It is my hope that as a class we will be able to create an interesting comic book from our explorations that will involve the participation of all the students. There will be homework as we make the effort to produce a practiced artistic response in the students. I will be using “The Official Marvel Tryout Book” and “How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way” both of which are available online through a variety of sources and would make great resource material for students. A great imagination and a desire to participate in this as a group project will help as well. I will be sharing examples of artists from both the comic book industry and other sources as we explore art and it applications in the world of storytelling.

Students will need a 12′ x17or18′ sketch book. A good Clear ruler several erasers and pencils.

Time required outside of class for homework: There will be homework.
